Funding
TalkLink offers a specialist assessment service to eligible clients in New Zealand. There is no charge for this service.
There are several government agencies that consider applications for funding assistive technology equipment. TalkLink may make a funding application on a client’s behalf, if they are eligible.
The TalkLink case manager will advise the client of the eligibility criteria for communication equipment funding. When the client is provided with funded communication equipment, they may keep it for as long as necessary. After the equipment is no longer needed, it should be returned to TalkLink, for re-issue to another client.
If the client is not eligible for communication equipment funding, then TalkLink may still advise about appropriate communication equipment. The client may then wish to purchase the equipment, or raise funds privately.
Ministry of Health (MoH)
The MoH may fund communication technology that assists a person to communicate their core needs and feelings, or ensures that they are safe in their environment. This is frequently technology to assist with speaking or may be equipment to control the environment.
Funding applications must be prioritised according to MoH criteria, equipment must have been trialled, and the identified solution must be cost effective.
The Ministry of Health may also fund equipment to enable adults to access employment or education.
Ministry of Education
(TalkLink Auckland - Wahanga Tu Korero)
In some instances, TalkLink is asked to conduct assessments for Communication technology that allows students to access the curriculum. This might involve technology to assist with writing or processing written information. Referrals are made to TalkLink by the Ministry of Education, Special Education Technology Teams. Funding applications will be prioritised according to Ministry of Education criteria. Equipment must be trialled and the identified solution must meet the goals as outlined in the child’s IEP (Individual Education Plan).
Workbridge
Communication technology that assists an adult to participate in tertiary education or training, to start a job, or to remain in or return to employment.
ACC
If you are an ACC claimant, then your ACC case manager must make the referral to TalkLink. ACC may fund equipment, including communication technology (for both spoken or written communication), or environmental control equipment.
Funding
Funding decisions for clients communication equipment are not made by TalkLink staff, although they can advise you of your eligibility. Funding is approved or declined by the funding agency.
If funding is declined, the TalkLink clinician or client may request a review of the funding decision. Alternatively, the client may pursue alternative funding options.
